If you spend a ton of money shopping, what do your credit card points earn you? A set of luggage, perhaps, or a new outfit or (after a few years) a plane ticket. But at Wells Fargo, customers can use their points to help save the planet. In the first U.S. program of its kind, individuals with 10,000 points can buy enough renewable energy certificates to compensate for more than seven tons of greenhouse gas emissions—which the company will then match, up to $100,000.

Long criticized for lending money to firms that support coal mining, logging and
power plants, Wells Fargo has recently upped its green cred by declaring its intention to devote more than $1 billion to "environmentally beneficial opportunities." Since 2005, the financial firm has helped fund 20 LEED-certified commercial buildings, six wind farms and dozens of green community development projects. It's also become one of three investors in one of the largest solar energy facilities ever built. Not a bad start.

As the second-largest purchaser of U.S. green power, Wells Fargo buys enough renewable wind energy certificates to offset 42% of its greenhouse gas emissions. It has also designed six of its own buildings to be among the top 10% of energy-efficient sites in the country. Its increasing effort to make a difference can be seen in the donations it made to 150 environmental groups last year and the 12,500 hours its employees spent working for green causes. Money talks, and it will be interesting to see what Wells Fargo says next.
